From Cotabato City to Surabaya: Notre Dame University Marks a Milestone in International Nursing Education

A new chapter in international academic engagement has begun for Notre Dame University (NDU), Cotabato City, Philippines , as students and faculty from its College of Health Sciences, led by Dean Dr. MJ Balawag , arrived in Surabaya, Indonesia, for a special academic visit to the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga , recognised as Indonesia's No. 1 nursing school. This inaugural visit represents a significant milestone for NDU, opening new opportunities for international exposure, cross-cultural learning, and academic collaboration. For participating students, the experience offers an opportunity to look beyond familiar classrooms and clinical environments. Engaging with an international nursing institution can broaden their understanding of nursing education, healthcare delivery, research, and professional practice within Southeast Asia. Ethical Review Training Brings PNSO Reviewers Together

On 26 September 2026, 6 members of the Philippine Nurses Scientific Organization (PNSO) gathered via Zoom for an ethics review training session focused on a question at the heart of every research project: how do we protect participants while supporting research that matters? Ethical review can appear straightforward on paper. A protocol arrives, reviewers examine the documents, and a decision follows. In practice, each application asks reviewers to exercise careful judgment. Is the consent process understandable? Are the risks proportionate to the potential benefits? Will personal information be protected? What should happen when a promising study needs changes before it can proceed? The training gave participants an opportunity to work through these questions together. Using simulated research documents, reviewers considered how ethical principles apply to decisions they may encounter as members of an institutional review board. The session also examined the different review pathways...

PolyU–UP Manila Global Nursing Evidence and Innovation Collaborative

The renewed Memorandum of Understanding between the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) School of Nursing and the University of the Philippines Manila College of Nursing (UPCN) provides an excellent opportunity to move from longstanding institutional cooperation toward a more structured, outcomes-oriented program of nursing research, education, and knowledge translation. We propose establishing the PolyU–UP Manila Global Nursing Evidence and Innovation Collaborative , a joint platform that will develop and test nursing solutions relevant to Hong Kong, the Philippines, and the wider Asian region. The Collaborative will build upon the partnership's existing achievements—including the establishment of the UP JBI Centre, academic exchanges, service-learning and student mobility, guest lectures, and doctoral training at PolyU—while introducing a stronger emphasis on joint knowledge production and measurable healthcare impact . Rather than undertaking isolated collaborative activ...

NDTC Academic at the Asian Institute of Management Climate Conference

As climate change continues to affect communities around the world, the role of healthcare professionals in disaster preparedness and public health resilience has become increasingly significant. In the Philippines, nurses are not only frontline caregivers but also advocates, educators, and researchers contributing to global conversations on climate action and community resilience.  Reflecting this growing impact, Dr. Mary Joy E. Hermosura, RN of Notre Dame of Tacurong College (NDTC) – College of Nursing proudly represented the institution at the 3rd Asian Conference on Climate Change and Disaster Resilience (ACCCDR 2026) held on April 30, 2026, at the Stephen Fuller Hall of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Makati City, Philippines. The international conference gathered policymakers, researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, and development leaders across Asia under the theme, “From Risk to Readiness: Investing in Climate Futures in Asia.” The event became a platf...

Transformative Leadership in Nursing Education Through Scholarship, and Service

By Beau Malinis At the heart of transformative nursing education is leadership that understands both people and systems. For Dr. Jordan H. Llego, Dean of the College of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Luzon, leadership is not defined by position alone, but by purpose—anchored on the quadrifocal mission of instruction, research, community extension, and quality assurance.  As an educator, Dr. Llego has consistently championed learner-centered, outcomes-based instruction. Under his leadership, nursing education is treated not merely as skills training, but as a formative journey that shapes critical thinkers, ethical practitioners, and future leaders. He is known for fostering academic environments where faculty development, curriculum innovation, and student mentorship intersect—ensuring that graduates are globally competitive yet deeply grounded in compassion and service. Research forms the intellectual backbone of Dr. Llego’s academic vision.  Dr Jordan Ll...
