Four Filipino Nurses Shine Among TOFA’s 100 Most Influential People in the World

The night glittered with pride and patriotism as the spotlight fell on four remarkable Filipino nurses who joined the ranks of the TOFA 100 Most Influential People in the World on 18 October 2025, at The Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The Outstanding Filipino Awards (TOFA), a prestigious U.S.-based award-giving body, honors Filipinos whose contributions uplift communities and shape industries around the world. Among this year’s global luminaries were four nursing leaders whose influence extends beyond hospitals and classrooms to the global stage of health, education, and advocacy—Dr. Jasper Erwin Tolarba, Dr. Jonathan Gapilango, Dr. Sigrid Barrett, and Dr. Rei Serafica.

Dr. Jasper Erwin Tolarba, an immediate past president of the Society of Internationally Educated Nurses in North America, has long been a champion for internationally educated nurses. His leadership has helped streamline credentialing processes that allow nurses around the world to practice safely and confidently in new health systems. Through his work, he continues to elevate the professional standing of migrant nurses and advocates for equitable recognition of their competencies—a legacy of service that exemplifies the Filipino spirit of malasakit (compassion).

Dr. Jonathan Gapilango, a respected educator and nursing leader, has dedicated his career to mentoring the next generation of nurses. Known for his scholarly work in leadership and clinical excellence, he continues to advocate for research-driven practice and cultural humility in healthcare. His recognition at TOFA highlights how Filipino nursing leadership thrives not only in hospitals but also in academia, shaping global conversations on patient-centered and evidence-based care.

Dr. Sigrid Barrett, Dean of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Nursing, made history as the first Filipino-American to hold this position. Her leadership blends innovation and inclusion, advancing the academic preparation of nurses while building bridges between communities and the healthcare system. Under her guidance, the UNLV School of Nursing continues to develop globally competent nurse leaders committed to excellence and social responsibility.

Dr. Rei Serafica, a UNLV visionary scholar and mentor, has contributed profoundly to nursing research and interprofessional education. His work emphasizes empathy, mental health, and the role of spirituality in healing—an approach that integrates science and humanity in patient care. His recognition by TOFA underscores how Filipino values of compassion and integrity can shape global health and leadership.

The achievements of these four nurses symbolize not only individual success but also the collective excellence of the Filipino nursing diaspora. Each honoree embodies a story of perseverance—beginning from humble roots, navigating migration challenges, and emerging as global leaders who bring honor to their profession and their homeland.

As the audience in Las Vegas applauded their names, it was more than a celebration of personal accolades—it was a reaffirmation of the Filipino nurse’s place in global history. From hospital wards to university halls, from policy tables to international forums, Filipino nurses have become indispensable leaders shaping the future of healthcare.

The recognition of these four distinguished professionals at TOFA 2025 sends a resounding message: excellence knows no borders, and the Filipino spirit of service continues to illuminate every corner of the world. Their success stands as a reminder that nursing is not just a career—it is a calling rooted in empathy, scholarship, and the courage to lead.

As the night concluded with the Filipino flag raised proudly on stage, it carried a promise to every nurse who dreams beyond borders: that their dedication can transform not only lives but the course of global healthcare itself.
